National Hotel*****
Hotel National was built in 1903 by the famous Russian architect Alexander Ivanov in a pompous eclectic style, which was very popular at the turn of the century. The construction cost nearly one million roubles, then a huge sum of money. Very soon hotel National became extremely popular among Russian businessmen for its luxury, restaurants and its services: it was the only hotel in the city with elevators.
In March 1918 the hotel became the First House of Soviets and accommodated members of bolsheviks government which moved to Moscow from Saint-Petersburg. Vladimir Lenin, the leader of the government, stayed in room No 107 before he moved to the Kremlin. A lot of world famous celebrities and businessmen, such as an american tycoon Armand Hammer, writers Anatol France, Herbert Wells, Henri Barbuss and many others were among the hotel guests.
In 1991 hotel National was closed for renovation which took four years to complete. In May 1995, when it was open, it looked just as it did in 1903 but in fact it was quite a different hotel in terms of equipment and services. Now it has a state-of-the-art kitchen, the most up-to-date fire-fighting equipment, a sophisticated security system. The hotel has 224 rooms including 37 suites. Most of them are individually designed and decorated. National Suites
are one bedroom suites in the corner of the building, overlooking the Kremlin and Tverskaya Street. Three of the National Suites have an additional small study room with a small guest bathroom. Equipped with antique furniture and paintings. Classic Suites are equipped with antique furniture and paintings. Vladimir Lenin preferred one of these suites when stayed at Hotel National.
Kremlin Suites
are one-bedroom suites with splendid views over the Kremlin. Equipped with antique furniture and paintings.
Business Suites
are one-bedroom suites which are mostly very quiet due to their location to the inner courtyard.
Double Luxury
are large rooms with separate sitting areas and spacious entrances. Most of them have excellent views, either overlooking the Kremlin or Tverskaya Street.
Standard Double and Standard Single
are very quiet and convenient rooms fit for an extensively travelling person, who needs a modest, but secure refuge at night. They have, direct dial telephone with an extension in the bathroom, air conditioning, satellite TV, a minibar, a trousers press and a hairdryer.
